Mezherich (Ferter Numer), Ukraine   (8)

Not to be confused with Mezritsh (Velyki Mezhyrichi), Ukraine, where the Mezritsher Magid, Rabbi Dov-Ber Fridman (died 1772) resided. This village was originally founded in 1845 as the fourth Jewish agricultural colony in the area with 50 Jewish families from Belarus; hence, its Yiddish nickname of “Ferter Number” (Number Four). In 2004, only 24 individuals lived here, including one Jewish woman who has since passed away. Throughout Eastern Europe there are some seventeen towns and villages by this name and its variants, such as Miedzyrzecz in Poland.
