In the author’s search for prenumerantn (pre-subscribers) to finance the printing of his book in 1890, Rabbi Avraham Bik traveled to almost 100 localities in the following 18 countries (listed according to their present names): England, Belgium, Netherlands, France, Switzerland, Germany, Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, Greece, Israel, Egypt, Tunisia, and Libya. Direct links are provided to the exact page listing the names of the pre-subscribers for each locality.
Prenumermantn can yield surprising finds, including lists of yeshiva students, such as this list from 1875 of 154 students (and their home towns) studying in the yeshiva in Putnok, Hungary. Another notable example is found in the Novominsker Rebbe’s Lev Aryeh ha-Ḥadash (1933) which includes separate prenumerantn lists for men and women. The latter enumerates 30 names of women, including one girl, all of whom apparently resided in Brooklyn. Project Zikaron has indexed thousands of localities mentioned in prenumerantn lists.
