Rabbi Y. Gibraltar provides a engaging portrait of Orthodox Jewish life in Kovno among its great Talmudic scholars and rabbis. His memoir was originally serialized in the Israeli newspaper, Yated Ne'eman. (Minor correction: Though he writes on p. 367 that his grandfather was a cantonist solider, Yitzchok's older cousin (who knew their grandfather) and older brothers clarified that their grandfather did did serve in the Russian military, in the 1870s, but did not serve as a cantonist soldier.)
