    The author’s 1909 “Petition for Naturalization” states that he was born in Ekaterinoslav, which is actually the last city in which he lived in Tsarist Russia. He refers to it on p. 39 as “a large city in the south” of the Ukraine to which his family moved ca. 1903. It is unknown where he was born and raised.
