Description
Rabbi Wolf Austerlitz of Eisenstadt (1802-1868), son of Salmon son of Leib, served as dayan (rabbinical judge) in Eisenstadt for many years. From 1840 – 1851 he served as the unofficial rabbi of the town. The ledger contains the record of about 260 circumcisions performed by Rabbi Austerlitz in Eisenstadt and the surrounding villages between 1835 and 1866.
The ledger includes the circumcision of several children of Rabbi Ezriel Hildesheimer (1820-1899), the rabbi of Eisenstadt from 1851-1869 and later of Berlin, where he became a leader of Orthodox Jewry.
A sample entry from 1841 (image 1) records the circumcision of Mandl, son of Mosheh Stampfe which took place after the passing and before the burial of the child’s mother. The child was named after his mother, whose name was Matl.
