This monthly periodical entitled Schochtim Shtimme [The Schochtim Voice] was published in New York from March 1932 until apparently May 1933 by Rabbi Shmaryohu Leib Hurwitz, with sections in both Yiddish and Hebrew. (Shochtim denotes kosher slaughterers in Hebrew.) It is fascinating to know that shochtim had their own periodical. Of particular interest are the letters from shochtim all over America (which has been indexed by Project Zikaron) reporting on their personal experiences and struggles. A publication by the same name was also published irregularly in Warsaw from 1926 until 1937 and was primarily concerned with the campaign to ban sh’khita (kosher slaughtering) in the Second Polish Republic (1918-1939), which did partial ban it in 1936. For one issue of the Naye Shochtim Shtime, which was published from 1939-1940, click here. Project Zikaron includes many such forgotten jewels, which have been indexed by place name.
